The city of Alma stretches out a total surface of 195,59 sq. km., of which 15 % is urbanized. The economic growth constantly grew until the 1970s, while the demographic growth regularly increased until the years 1960s. The last census from Statistics Canada (2011) established the Alma population at 30 905 habitants. The presence of heavy industries allows to maintain an important level of economic activities, while the small and medium size businesses contribute to the city's growth. Let's highlight that the city center stayed an imporant element of the local dynamism over the years due to the efforts of the whole community. Most of the territory is occupied by lancrops and many agricultural exploitations which alos contribute to the city's economic growth. Finally, from a geographic point of view, Alma is adjacent to the Lake Saint-Jean and crossed by two rivers; the Grande Décharge and the Petite Décharge which form the Saguenay river at its junction. As a whole, many geographic accidents such as broken relief, profound ravines and rocky outcrops mark Alma's territory. These constraints contribute to the great esthetic value of the urban scenery as well as very beautiful natural sites. With its 30 905 habitants, Alma is the metropolis of the MRC Lac-Saint-Jean-Est. It serves on many levels a population of 52 520 habitants. The other municipalities of the MRC total therefore a population of over 21 000 habitants. From a regional level, Alma is located at the heart of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Its total population is around 275 000 habitants.
